WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

All History For Humans videos teach through the power of story to make the history relevant and meaningful to students. In the first lesson, students learn about the terrible difficulties the English faced settling at Jamestown and how tobacco and leadership saved the colony from disaster. In the second video-lesson, students discover what drove the Pilgrims and Puritans to seek religious freedom and a new destiny in America and the major characteristics of the New England colonies. Then, students learn how William Penn and the Quakers tried to create a 'Holy Experiment' of liberal government, fair treatment to Indians, and religious tolerance while settling the rich lands of Pennsylvania and the challenges they faced doing so. In the final lesson, students learn about America's first radical: Roger Williams and his fight to separate church and state, how that got him banished from Massachusetts Bay, and how it led him to found Rhode Island on that revolutionary principle. 

***The lessons cover state-standards while making sure the content is still interesting. 

ACTIVITIES IN THIS BUNDLE

2. Dissenters in New England: Create 3 character profiles of Anne Hutchinson, Thomas Hooker, and Roger Williams on their impact, how they dissented, and what we can learn from them.

3. Design a Comic Cover: Illustrate the story of the Quakers & William Penn and their mission for Pennsylvania in a creative, fun way!

4. Does it violate the first amendment? Students first review Roger Williams efforts to separate church and state and how this led to the first amendment's "establishment clause" then they review 4 real Supreme Court cases to decide if the actions violate the separation of church and state.
