The driving question of the video is "How did William Penn's Quaker beliefs influence the development of Pennsylvania?" It teaches how the Quakers were persecuted for their beliefs in England and New England and how this led William Penn to start his "Holy Experiment." It covers how religious tolerance was the primary goal of the colony, how Philadelphia was a new type of city with wide streets and parks, and how the constitution Penn developed led some democracy to emerge there, and his remarkably positive relations with Indian tribes, especially the Lenape Indians. Penn's advertisements attracted diverse ethnic groups and a mixed economy to develop in the region as well. Lastly, it covers some of the darker aspects that emerged- slavery and over time, conflict with Indian tribes.
***The lessons cover state-standards while making sure the content is still interesting.
After the video, notes, and quiz, students design a comic book or anime cover to capture the amazing story of Penn's Holy Experiment and the settling of Pennsylvania. All resources are included- students use the video and a short reading to help them with their creative designs!
