A great way to teach Immigration and urbanization in the Gilded Age. Students learn about Jacob Riis and How the Other Half Lives to discover what life was like in America for the urban poor.
After taking notes on a video and a reading, students choose one of Riis' photographs and write a journal entry from the perspective of that person.
Students love this activity and they enjoy forming groups after writing their journals to share their stories with their peers! Its a hit, for sure!
