WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

All episodes and lessons teach through the power of story to make history relevant and engaging for students. In the first episode students learn what caused the Cold War and how the Berlin Airlift was the first major challenge the US faced. In the next video-lesson, students learn how the Red Scare impacted America at home and led to the dangerous rise of Joseph McCarthy. In the last episode, students learn about the arms-race and how the Cuban Missile Crisis nearly led to nuclear war and how Kennedy handled the crisis. The lessons cover state-standards while making sure the content is still rich and interesting. 

ACTIVITIES IN THIS BUNDLE

1. Analyze primary sources to understand why a crisis developed in Berlin and how both the US and USSR handled it.

2. Compare political cartoons and a speech on McCarthyism to understand how civil liberties were tarnished during the Red Scare.

3. Presidential Decision Simulation- Students act as EXCOMM and Kennedy to decide how to handle the Cuban Missile Crisis. They weigh the options, make a decision, and write a speech to the public.

 BONUS ACTIVITIES AND LESSONS:

4. McCarthyism Simulation: Can you survive the Red Scare? Students get role cards of real people involved in the Red Scare and McCarthy Era and the two students acting as McCarthy and Nixon in high-pressure rounds of a game must find out who are the real communists and spies in the classroom! This one is unforgettable and leads to such great insights into the era.

5. Cold War Matching Timeline: A fun competitive game where students must match terms, to images, and their significance/impact, and put it in order on a timeline! First team to get it all right wins! Its fast-paced, fierce, and really helps kids learn the most important events of the early Cold War!

6. Women's Roles in Post-War America History Lab- Students analyze 6 primary sources including a political cartoon, Folger's Coffee commercial, three text-based documents, and a Rolling Stones song to determine the reality of women's roles in the 1950s and 1960s.

7. The Stormy 1960s Overview: Students read a secondary source, complete a thinking map, and answer review questions.
