In this investigative and engaging stations activity, students explore, "What was life like for those living through the Great Depression?"
At each station students complete a different task and have to think about the Great Depression differently. At station one, they learn about the Dust Bowl and have to write a fictional news article. At station two, they analyze Dorothea Lange photograph to understand the hardships people faced. At station five, students pretend they are residents of a Hooverville and answer interview questions from a reporter about their lives in a shantytown. For station four they listen to a Bessie Smith song (Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out), analyze lyrics, and then write another verse to the song. Lastly, there is an optional fifth station where students analyze the psychological effects of the Depression on the American people.
