What Students Learn

Students learn what the Lost Cause was, why it developed after the Civil War, and how it minimized the role of slavery while portraying the Confederacy as noble and heroic. They then analyze real Confederate monuments and dedication speeches to determine whether they support Lost Cause myths or present an honest view of history.

The lesson ends with students taking a position on what should be done with Confederate monuments and designing a simple monument sketch that reflects the Civil War accurately while connecting to modern American values.
